Şanlıurfa — Urfa to almost everyone — is a city of pilgrimage as much as of history. At its heart lie the pools of Balıklıgöl, thick with carp that no one will eat: tradition holds that Nimrod cast Abraham into a fire here and God turned the flames to water and the embers to fish.
Beside the pools, a cave venerated as Abraham's birthplace draws a steady stream of visitors, and the surrounding gardens fill on Friday afternoons. The covered bazaar nearby is one of the least touristed in Türkiye, its courtyards still given over to coppersmiths, felt-makers and men drinking bitter mırra coffee.
The Archaeology Museum is essential context for Göbekli Tepe, holding original pillars and the Balıklıgöl statue — a limestone man with obsidian eyes, carved around 9000 BC and among the oldest life-sized human figures ever found.
