Gelati and Motsameta
We start in the hills above Kutaisi at the UNESCO-listed Gelati Monastery and the clifftop Motsameta, then begin the long, beautiful climb north toward the high Caucasus.

Mestia
The road winds up into Svaneti, a land of medieval stone tower-houses beneath the highest peaks of the Caucasus. We settle in the mountain town of Mestia and visit its remarkable Svaneti museum of icons and manuscripts.

Ushguli by 4x4
A full 4x4 day to Ushguli, one of the highest permanently inhabited villages in Europe, its cluster of ancient towers standing beneath the white wall of Mount Shkhara.

We make the scenic descent out of the mountains and back to Kutaisi for departure, with the towers of Svaneti receding behind us.
