Samegrelo
Lush western region of palaces and canyons
In the warm, fertile lowlands of western Georgia, Samegrelo is the land of the Mingrelians — a region of palm-lined towns, subtropical greenery, fierce cuisine and a proud princely past.
Its centre is Zugdidi, home to the Dadiani Palace, seat of the ruling Dadiani dynasty, whose museum holds an astonishing collection — including one of Napoleon’s death masks, brought to Georgia through a royal marriage.
The region’s nature is just as striking: the emerald Martvili Canyon and the lesser-known Skurcha canyon cut through its forests, while the Enguri Dam, one of the tallest in the world, marks the road north toward Svaneti.
Mingrelian food is among the boldest in Georgia — expect plenty of walnut, spice and the fiery ajika paste that defines the local table.
Join us in Samegrelo to taste the spice and discover the princely heart of western Georgia.
