Borjomi

Tucked into a forested gorge in south-central Georgia, Borjomi is the country’s most famous spa town — a place where mineral springs, pine-clad mountains and faded imperial grandeur come together. For more than a century, Georgia’s elite and the Russian aristocracy travelled here to take the waters, and the town still carries that gentle, restorative air.

The heart of Borjomi is its Central Park, where visitors drink the naturally carbonated mineral water straight from the source — warm, salty and famously good for the digestion. Beyond the park, a forest trail leads to open-air sulphur pools where you can bathe in warm water surrounded by trees, a favourite ritual after a day in the mountains.

Above the town rises the Borjomi-Kharagauli National Park, one of the largest protected areas in Europe, with marked hiking trails through dense forest and alpine meadow. A short ride away, the Romanov summer palace at Likani recalls the days when Borjomi was the favoured retreat of the Russian imperial family.

Borjomi also serves as the gateway to Georgia’s deep south. From here the road climbs toward the cave city of Vardzia and the restored Rabati Castle in Akhaltsikhe, making the town a natural overnight stop on any southern itinerary.
