Stand before Vardzia, the astonishing 12th-century cave city of Queen Tamar, carved across thirteen levels into a mountainside. Explore tunnels, chapels and frescoes that once sheltered a whole community on the road through Georgia’s deep south.

1
Tbilisi to Uplistsikhe and Borjomi
Leaving Tbilisi, we break the journey at the ancient rock-cut town of Uplistsikhe, wandering its halls, wine cellars and pagan altars carved straight into the cliff. By afternoon we reach Borjomi, the forested spa town, where we stroll the mineral-water park and breathe the pine-scented air of the valley before settling in for the night.

Vardzia and Rabati Castle
This morning we explore Vardzia, the astonishing 12th-century cave city of Queen Tamar, carved across thirteen levels into a mountainside above the river. On the way back we stop at the beautifully restored Rabati Castle in Akhaltsikhe, where Georgian, Ottoman and Persian styles meet, before the drive back to Tbilisi.
