Day 2 The Land of Vine and Stone
After breakfast, we leave Tbilisi heading east through the winding Gombori Pass. Two hours later, the Alazani Valley opens before us – the cradle of Georgian winemaking.
Our first stop is the Alaverdi Monastery, an 11th-century cathedral surrounded by ancient stone walls, where monks still produce wine in clay qvevri. A short tasting introduces us to the spirit of Kakheti.
Next, we climb to the Nekresi Monastery, perched on a forested hill overlooking an ocean of vineyards. Silence, birdsong, and the scent of cypress fill the air.
By afternoon we reach Telavi, the historic capital of Kakheti. We visit the local market with its spices and sweets, see the ancient plane tree, and enjoy dinner at a family winery – wine, churchkhela, and long Georgian conversations into the night.

Overnight in Telavi

Day 3 The Road to Tusheti
Early morning – vehicle change: from a comfortable SUV to a 4x4 with a local mountain driver, a man who knows every curve of the Abano Pass.
The journey over Abano Pass (2,926 m) is one of the most spectacular and challenging roads in Europe. Along the way we stop for tea with shepherds and watch the landscape change from gentle vineyards to raw alpine ridges.
After 5–6 hours we reach Omalo, a remote mountain village at the edge of the world. Wooden houses, stone towers, and the scent of juniper fill the air. Above the village rises the Keselo Fortress, standing guard over the valley.
Dinner with a local family – cheese, homemade bread, wine, and stories about mountain spirits.
Overnight in Omalo
Day 4 Spirit of the Caucasus
A full day exploring the soul of Tusheti.
We travel through ancient villages such as Dartlo, Kvavlo, and Parsma, each crowned with medieval defensive towers.
Another option is a short hike or horseback ride to Diklo Fortress, gazing out over the border with Dagestan. Here, time stands still.
Evening by the fire – songs, chacha, and endless mountain stars.
Overnight in Omalo

Day 5 Down from the Mountains
Early descent from Tusheti across Abano Pass – a few hours of mud, mist, and breathtaking views.
We continue to Sighnaghi, the romantic “City of Love” perched above the Alazani Valley. Cobbled streets, red rooftops, and panoramic views make it the perfect place to unwind after the mountains.
Evening walk along the city walls, sunset over the vineyards, and a glass of wine in a cozy cellar.
Overnight in Sighnaghi
Day 6 To the Edge of Georgia
Morning departure toward the semi-desert lands of southeastern Georgia. After 3–4 hours we reach Dedoplistskaro, where we register at the national park office.
Our Vashlovani adventure begins – a surreal world of canyons, mud volcanoes (Takhti-Tepa), and the vast Pantishara plateau. Gazelles roam the plains; eagles glide overhead. The colors shift from gold to ochre as the sun moves across the steppe.
Overnight in Sighnaghi

Day 7 Monasteries and Desert Landscapes
After breakfast, we drive south toward the David Gareji Monastery Complex, a labyrinth of cave churches and frescoes carved into sandstone hills on the border with Azerbaijan.
We explore the complex, its ancient murals, and the lunar desert scenery stretching beyond the ridge. After the David Gareji Monastery, we are coming back to Tbilisi.
