Racha

Tucked into the northern mountains of Georgia, Racha is a quiet, deeply green region of forested valleys, alpine meadows and slow village life — one of the country’s least-visited and most rewarding corners.

Its great monument is the 11th-century church of Nikortsminda, covered inside and out with some of the most intricate stone carving and fresco work in Georgia. The old town of Oni, with its historic synagogue, speaks of the region’s long Jewish heritage.

Higher up, the alpine resort of Shovi sits among pine forests and mineral springs, a base for walking in the high Caucasus. Racha is also wine country, home to the famous semi-sweet red Khvanchkara.

Remote and unhurried, Racha rewards travellers who want mountains without crowds, often combined with the canyons and monasteries near Kutaisi.
