Tatev
Tatev Monastery is a masterpiece soaring over the abyss. Resting on the edge of a giant basalt plateau, this medieval complex seems to touch the heavens. The journey there is an adventure in itself: the "Wings of Tatev" cable car, the longest in the world, carries you over the breathtaking Vorotan River Gorge, revealing stunning panoramas of mountain ridges and hidden waterfalls.
Within the fortress walls lies the history of one of the most important spiritual and scientific centers of medieval Armenia. In the 14th century, it housed a renowned university where manuscripts were illuminated and philosophy was taught. Walking through the courtyard, look for the Gavazan—a unique 8-meter tall swinging pillar, an ancient seismograph that warned monks of earthquakes and approaching enemy armies.
Tatev is a place of power and solitude. Cut off from the world by deep canyons, it has preserved the atmosphere of an impregnable fortress of the spirit. Here, watching the clouds drift through the gorge below, you understand why the monastery’s name translates to "Give Wings." This is more than a journey into the mountains; it is a flight toward new heights of history and beauty.
