Telavi is where Georgian wine country does its business. It is a real town rather than a showpiece: a market that fills before dawn, a broad boulevard shaded by planes, and the royal residence of Batonis Tsikhe, from which King Erekle II ruled the kingdom of Kartli-Kakheti in the eighteenth century.
The town's most photographed resident is a plane tree said to be around nine hundred years old, its trunk wide enough that a dozen people cannot join hands around it.
Telavi makes the natural base for exploring Kakheti. Tsinandali, the estate of Prince Alexander Chavchavadze with Georgia's first European-style winery, is fifteen minutes away; the eleventh-century cathedral of Alaverdi rises from the vineyards to the north.
