Gremi Complex: Royal Past of Kakheti and the Legend of Queen Ketevan

If you are planning a trip to Georgia’s famous Kakheti wine region, there is one dramatic silhouette you simply cannot miss. Rising above the green Alazani Valley, perched on a rocky crag, stands Gremi - a striking complex of a royal citadel and the Church of the Archangels.
Today, it looks like a peaceful storybook castle, but Gremi holds the memory of a golden age, royal intrigue, and a sudden tragic fall. Long before Telavi took the crown, Gremi was the bustling capital of the Kingdom of Kakheti in the 16th and 17th centuries. Under King Levan of Kakheti, Gremi turned into a vibrant Silk Road trading hub filled with markets, royal palaces, bathhouses, and caravanserais.
However, in 1615, the Persian ruler Shah Abbas I invaded Kakheti, laying the grand city to waste. Earlier, the Shah demanded hostages to ensure Kakheti’s loyalty. To save her people from immediate destruction and bloodshed, Queen Ketevan, regent from 1605 to 1614 during her son Teimuraz I's minority, voluntarily surrendered herself as a hostage, traveling to Shiraz, Persia. For ten long years, she lived under house arrest. Shah Abbas tried everything to persuade and force her to renounce her Christian faith, marry him, and convert to Islam. Conversion would mean Kakheti’s complete submission to Persia. And Ketevan refused.
In 1624, after a decade of steadfast refusal, the Shah ordered her execution. Queen Ketevan suffered brutal torture, remaining true to her faith and her nation until her final breath. Portuguese monks who witnessed her martyrdom secretly preserved her relics and carried them across continents.
Today, Queen Ketevan is venerated as a saint by the Georgian Orthodox Church, and her strength remains a symbol of Kakheti's unbreakable spirit.

The Church of the Archangels (1565). This classic Georgian domed church, which was built by King Levan, features preserved 16th-century frescoes inside. If you look closely, you will spot a portrait of King Levan himself holding a miniature model of the church.
The Royal Tower & Museum. The small museum houses archaeological finds from the ancient city, including medieval weaponry, armor, and wine vessels (qvevri).
