Bakuriani is the older and gentler of Georgia's two main winter resorts. Where Gudauri is bare and alpine, Bakuriani sits at 1,700 metres inside a pine forest on the Borjomi plateau, and its slopes are graded for families and beginners as much as for confident skiers.

The resort spreads across several separate areas — Didveli has the longest runs and the modern gondola, Kokhta-Mitarbi the steeper pitches, and the old town slopes are where children learn.

The most charming way to arrive is the Kukushka, a narrow-gauge railway built in the 1890s that climbs from Borjomi through the forest in a little over two hours, crossing a steel bridge attributed to the workshop of Gustave Eiffel.
