Prometheus Cave — Kumistavi in Georgian — was discovered in 1984 and opened to visitors in 2011. A walkway of about 1.4 kilometres runs through six of its twenty-two halls, past curtains of stalactites, columns and rimstone pools, all under coloured lighting that divides opinion but photographs well.
The cave keeps a constant temperature of around 14 degrees whatever the season, which makes it a reliable option on the hottest summer days in Imereti, when the lowlands are heavy and humid.
The visit ends with an optional boat ride along an underground river out of the mountain. Nearby Sataplia Nature Reserve holds another, smaller cave and a set of preserved dinosaur footprints, and the two are easily combined in one morning.
